2021 outlook

Modest improvement in spend offset by simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry.

  • While remaining down from year-ago levels, updated spend on Akamai into year-end has improved from data collected three months ago primarily driven by more customers increasing spend in Information Security. Expected spend in Productivity Apps (CDN) remains largely unchanged from the lackluster data captured in our previous survey.
  • Overall spend on Akamai is slightly improving vs year - ago levels due to more planned adoptions and less customer indications to decrease spend or replace the vendor. This modest improvement is more pronounced in the Productivity Apps sector (CDN), while expected spend within Information Security is flat vs one year ago and down from 2H’20 levels.

Akamai Tracking the Conversation -

  • For example, many of the questions that I always receive is why do you not use the AWS CDN, for example. Why or why we canno t continue using Akamai from our traditional CDN that we used to use in our own premises? And mostly the answer is trying to de cou ple and trying to provide actually that service that is going to be enabling us to easily move from one cloud provider to another clo ud provider, and give us actually that speed, agility, and security that we need as a financial institution.

  • And I think there’s a few reasons why you see companies like Cloudflare, Fastly, we can go down the list, the Limelights and what have you, have really seen a lot of success. It’s because they build all the products and services into their platform natively. You don’t have to have bolt on solutions. You don’t have to have additional costs associated with getting DDOS, getting WAF, getting all of these other components that you have to pay independently for through Akamai in order to get that type of capability in the environment. The other thing that you see, and we use Akamai, we use Cloudflare. I will say that we use both and we are transitioning away from Akamai because of a lot of the costs associated with operating in this environment where every other component that you want to utilize to either provider more security capabilities or to get more advanced feature sets, you have to pay for an additional function in the Akamai world. With Cloudflare, or these other new age vendors who have already been cloud native and built these solutions as part of their core product structure, you don’t encounter any of those situations. And typically, the integration component, as well as the ease of use, is much more advanced. The advantage that Akamai’s had for many, many years, obviously, is that they were the first ones in the game, and they had a larger footprint. But now as you’re seeing the other companies really start to expand more and make these investments in the other regions, when you look at the overall benefits, it’s very compelling to look at other options versus an Akamai.

  • Yeah, sure. I mean I’ve been a customer of Akamai in prior lives and a customer of Fastly. I think the challenge is in my view retrofitting net new technologies into a legacy platform. The staleness, the slowness that Akamai has been in this space in revamping their platforms has I think cost them customers. And certainly, other competitors in the market are accelerating much faster with innovation in certain segments like I would say security, and serverless compute at the edge. Even something as basic as traditional monitoring and views into customer interactions and performance of your platform on their stack leaves a lot to be desired. In my view, I think Cloudflare and Fastly have been able to surpass Akamai in terms of technology capabilities because they’re able to innovate and execute at a much quicker pace since they don’t have the noose of a legacy platform and/or business around their necks.
